There are certain routine changes I made lately and that has led to a lot of revelations I wanted to share with you all. We all know that skincare products or anything applied topically can have only certain effect on the health of our skin. To get a healthy skin it’s not just the best skincare products we need to choose, we also need to introspect our lifestyle and diet intake. Usually I’m very cautious of oily and spicy food and I limit myself from frequently eating out. However, once in a while, I do indulge in sporadic cravings and eat unhealthy food items too. Personally, I feel it’s okay as long as you can control yourself and not make it a recurrent affair.
My skin is very oily and prone to sporadic breakouts. It’s actually quite unpredictable – some days I’ll have the most flawless glowy skin and other days I’ll get several angry zits on my face, neck and back. It doesn’t just happen during my monthly cycle or when I eat from out or consume oily food, it just happens on its own whims and fancies. So I have to be very careful of my daily routine.
The first major change I made recently was to stop consuming Indian tea (with milk and very light sugar). It’s a big step for me because I’m a big time tea lover. I shifted from my usual tea to herbal tea (actual tea leaves with dried flowers and spices). I don’t add honey or lemon or anything to my herbal tea. I prefer its natural taste. For my herbal tea, I really love Tea Trunk teas. It was through an Instagram ad that I stumbled upon this amazing tea brand.
If you don’t know about Tea Trunk – Tea Trunk (founded by Snigdha Manchanda, Tea Sommelier) curates the finest teas of India and crafts them into unique blends with all natural ingredients. Their teas are whole leaf, flavorful and healthy. They contain no artificial colors, No additives, and no tea dust. So one can enjoy tea just like it should be. And since then, I have been purchasing tea from them regularly. Some of my favorite tea are Oolong tea, Hibiscus green tea and mint and mango green tea. As a routine, I consume oolong tea and hibiscus tea at least twice a day.
Rose Oolong tea boosts the rate of metabolism. It perfectly complements one’s fitness regime as it can help in burning body fat over time. A rich source of Vitamin C, this tea is also high in antioxidants, which helps with a clear acne-free skin. Whereas Hibiscus green tea helps in cooling down the body temperature, making it an excellent choice for tea lovers who experience harsh summers and tropical weather. Rich in Vitamin C, Hibiscus tea improves immunity and protects against common cold and sore throat. Its anti-inflammatory properties, makes it a good tonic for the liver.
The second recent change I have made is to consume stir fried mixed vegetables with my meals. I used to consume salads or raw carrots and cucumbers with my meals earlier. But now I have started consuming stir fry vegetables with my meals (especially dinner). I add very little mustard oil to it (mustard oil has several health benefits) and cook the vegetables until it is al dente. I also make sure to include different colors of vegetables (like broccoli, green beans, carrots, mushrooms, onion, tomatoes, bell peppers, capsicum, etc). So this way I consume a lot of fibers and stay satiated.
Fibrous vegetables help in burning fat without adding a lot of calories and also elevate your metabolism. I normally eat dinner a little early by 6.30-7 PM and sleep at around 11 PM. Earlier when I used to feel peckish at around 8:30-9:00 PM, I would munch on carrots and cucumber. But now since I have started including mixed vegetables with my meal, I don’t feel peckish anymore. I stay full for a long time now. I have noticed my skin has become glowy, brighter, healthier, and my breakouts have reduced too. In fact, I have had friends complimenting that my skin is glowing these days. And I simply chuckle.
Apart from these two major changes, there are also few other things I diligently follow. I always drink warm water first thing in the morning. A very warm cup of water in the morning can help cleanse your body by flushing out toxins. Also, I don’t drink any juices, water or beverages while or immediately after meals. In fact, I make it a point to consume warm water after 45 minutes to an hour post meal. Warm water ensures faster digestion and also helps in burning fat. If your gut is clear of toxins, your face will automatically glow and look healthy. If at all I have to drink water immediately after meal, I’ll either opt for herbal tea or very warm water.
Personally I don’t believe in dieting; in fact I believe in consuming the right things at the right time. I don’t compromise on my breakfast and always opt for heavier meals during the first half of the day. I refrain from binge eating; and mostly opt for healthier and homemade food items. Having said that, I do eat junk food like burgers, chips, fries, cold drinks once in a while but I keep those occasions rare. It takes a little trial and error but once you understand the rhythm of your body, then it gets really easy to achieve a healthy skin and a fit body.
