Hi Friends! I’m so excited to present another Q&A sesh; and this time, it’s with the very warm and kind founder of a natural anti-aging skincare line based on the Ayurveda philosophy – Dafna’s Personal Skincare.
Dafna, lives and works in Madrid, has always been passionate about the natural world. Her training, as an aromatherapist, naturopathist and cosmetics formulator of natural products, includes numerous courses and workshops in London, Tel Aviv and Madrid. So let’s know more about Dafna’s unique skincare formulations and her vision about how the products and the brand came to be.
Greenchicgirl: It’s intriguing to know that Dafna Skincare is based on your own name “Dafna;” which means Laurel leaves in Hebrew. Beautiful! Tell us more about what motivated you to start your own skincare line?
Essential oils and creating natural skincare has been my passion for many years. I found that both add so much to life! It’s funny but since I was a child people knew that when I was upset, just “playing” a bit with essential oils and putting my creams would make me a new person :).
I felt that natural skincare with holistic perspective of Ayurveda and how it can help heal our skin and mental concerns is still not enough out there. Today with the hectic life we live and with no rest, if we get to indulge in skincare products that not only do miracles to our skin but can benefit ourselves as “persons” – it’s a must!
This is why we use 100% bio and natural essential oils in our products and no fragrance/fragrance derived from essential oils – we want to provide this magic touch of real essential oils to our skin and to our soul.
Each Dafna product has its unique aroma to target to the specific moment of the day.
Greenchicgirl: What are the special ingredients used in Dafna products? And as a formulator how do you select your key ingredients?
My passion is for ingredients with story – that has ancient known effect both on skin and the soul. As I already mentioned essential oils – I always look and test the essential oil to be of the right aroma and effect I am looking for (has to be grown at certain places I want, not everywhere – as the chemical elements change depending upon the conditions where it’s grown); same goes for the extracts and oils. I love Ginseng, Reishi, Lemon Grass, Figs, etc. and I choose all from their origin country, so they have the full effect I am looking for.
For example, Moringa – we outsource the plant directly from the Himalayas. That plant has to survive a very difficult weather like, rapid change from hit to cold; height… it affects its vitality and ability to survive; etc. I love to add these capabilities to my creams! (We use Moringa in the Recovery Cleanser).
Another example is Ginseng, which I use in Nutrition and Revival. This plant has been used for generations in China. It is generally used to tone the body functionality. I think that using ingredient that you can also eat, and use for the entire body system makes a huge difference…it acts upon the entire person.
Greenchicgirl: I read on your website about DR2 Wellbeing Line. What is it? How did you come up with that line?
Today we live a life that is so different from the life 100 years ago. Even if we try to live peacefully, we are exposed to so much pollution and much more stress. All this affects not only our skin, but our soul, our body, and our mind; so our line of products is designed for the entire holistic support.
DR2 stands for: Detox-Recover-Destress-Recharge: These are the four magic elements we’re working with in our skincare collection. DR2 Wellbeing Line combats the extrinsic and intrinsic factors of: free radicals, dehydration and intrinsic stress that cause skin early ageing and accumulated damages. For example, Recharge employs ingredients that recharge the cells with energy and help enhance the Collagen and Elastin, which are the skin building blocks, production and synthesis.
I strongly believe that we need to combine the physical and mental aspects to experience the holistic healing benefits of skincare products. So we applied it to our skincare line. Each product has this double effect.
For example, in our Recovery Cleanser we use bio lemongrass, originally from India – well known for its detox capacities in a holistic way. Or Neroli – as essential oil helps skin look fresh and on a mental level gives hope, freshness, and happiness (few studies have shown that usage of Neroli and other citrus plants have helped people in depression feel better and be more motivated in life).
Greenchicgirl: Two of your products have won Beauty Shortlist Award 2018 – Best Night Treatment & Best Daily Serum. Congratulations! What would you attribute this success to?
Thank you! It is very exciting. Also this year we won as “Best International Skincare Brand” by the Beauty Short List.
I think success comes due to hard work and having products that are more than just good skincare. Our team works really hard non-stop to provide special and unique skincare solutions.
Greenchicgirl: What’s in the pipeline for Dafna skincare? Any new product launches or sneak peeks?
There are few formulas I am working on right now… but until I am completely sure about them I am not launching them; sometimes it takes years of design work. Currently, I am working on two products; I hope one will be released this summer and the other later this year. Hope soon I will be able to share more. (signs off)
