Hi friends! You guys might already know that I’m deeply passionate about exploring new artisan brands and bringing forward their story, their vision, and their philosophy. So today’s Q&A session is with Wei Tham, the lovely founder of Coast Sydney Botanicals.
Greenchicgirl: There’s always a story behind how the brand came to be. What’s yours?
Like many people, I started out extremely skeptical of the efficacy of “organic” and “botanical” skincare products. Like many women, I once spent large sums of money on commercial cosmetics, seeking the Fountain of Youth and Radiant Skin. Also like many people, I tried these products based on their marketing pitches, and not the contents of the formula.
For over 5 years, I had been dealing with contact dermatitis. I had been able to manage the dermatitis with steroid creams, but it never went away. So I began researching more natural remedies; as many people do when “standard” treatments fail. Because of my research, I started experimenting with an extremely pure and high quality Rosehip Seed CO2 Oil. To my surprise, the itch had dissipated in only 2 days; and just within 1 week there was both continued improvement, and a reduction in the scarring I had experienced. Needless to say, I no longer suffer from this dermatitis. It was a turning point as I came to the realization that using high quality oils mattered and the extraction method also mattered equally as it would determine its purity and hence effectiveness.
After extensive research, I launched Coast Sydney Botanicals in 2016. Coast is symbolic for the freedom and lifestyle we enjoy. Sydney is symbolic as my home and shows the feminine side. Our brand is not just about selling skincare and perfume but selling confidence, supported by nature. We believe that the real beauty is confidence and we hope that our products can nourish your skin daily, giving you a reason to smile and be confident.
Greenchicgirl: When you started formulating products – what did you have in mind? What was your focus or your vision?
Naturally I had to create my very first serum oil using the Rosehip Seed CO2 oil that had healed me. Our first born FRESH WATERS Renew Serum Oil, was received with glowing reviews as this deeply penetrative serum works it magic with nutrients from Rosehip Seed CO2 and Seabuckthorn Berry CO2 oil. Using CO2 extracted oils mattered as this extraction method, compared to solvent method and cold press method, was far superior as it yielded purer extracts due to lower temperature extraction. My vision was to create a line of natural organic skincare that would work to bring back the balance to our skin, focusing on the nutrients that we need to apply onto our skin. What we put on skin matters. I wanted our skincare collection to be based on simplicity – as you will see the Tangerine Love Oil cleanser does the job effectively. Not just that, our products are also packed with nutrients which make them multi-taskers as serums and moisturizers.
My focus was on creating products that would be loved by the go-getter in us all, mothers, sisters, daughters who are juggling multiple commitments who desire simplicity and luxury – they can co-exist in our products! Part of the vision I had was to create a visually striking product by celebrating natural colors! You will see my products are packaged in clear bottles so that you can see how much is left and what is in each bottle.
Greenchicgirl: I love all the CSB products I have tried so far. And even though the products I used were not specifically designed for my skin type, I enjoyed using them and never had any issues. (Thank you for that!) But how do you ensure that kind of results with your products?
That’s the beauty of using natural organic ingredients as they often synthesize with our body and by keeping to the right dermal limits of active ingredients and also using non-clogging oils (non-comedogenic), our products are safe for most skin types. As we use essential oils which may contain allergens, we always remind the clients to spot test before use to ensure no allergies. We also test our products on people, mostly myself and my family and friends, before we launch any product.

Greenchicgirl: The most raved and loved collection is the Nephelium collection (harvested from Rambutan fruit via technical water extraction method resulting in high performance extracts). What’s so special or unique about this collection? How is it different from your other products?
Nephelium Lappaceum is a patented botanical nutrient garnered from the Rambutan fruit seed peel. We pack our serum full of this glorious botanical, which has proven to be highly effective as an anti-wrinkle agent. What’s more; the moisturizing properties are delicious – leaving your skin nourished and full of anti-oxidants and anti-glycation nutrients.
So, what sets this little beauty apart from others? All-natural goodness with an amazing backstory.
The science behind the Nephelium serum
Nephelium is harvested from the rambutan fruit via a careful technical water extraction method resulting in high performance extracts. The extract is then clinically tested against fine lines and wrinkles – the results yield visible smoothing and tightening of the skin after just 28 days of use (at 2% concentration).
Tradition meets the future
The rambutan fruit is well known for its medicinal goodness and has been used for centuries for its antiseptic and antioxidant properties. However, like many examples in the modern world, we’ve only recently discovered its remarkable hidden properties and the effect they have on skin.
We ingeniously combine Nephelium with several other active botanical nutrients. These synergies elevate Nephelium’s natural power to give you real results.
East Meets West: Coast Sydney Botanicals have captured the abundant benefits of this traditional eastern fruit in our Sydney studio so we can offer natural and effective nutrients to your beauty routine.
Greenchicgirl: Apart from skincare collection, CSB also carries a promising line of handcrafted perfumes. I’m quite intrigued to know. Tell us more about them.
I’m very drawn to scents; it can either lift my mood or do just the opposite, if a scent is too overbearing! I was never crazy about commercial perfumes as it was too strong for my liking (at times I would get headache from it). I stayed clear of it for years without really knowing the stuff that’s goes into making a perfume.
Naturally after my extensive research and discovery of the “holy grail” of natural ingredients ( yes, my rosehip CO2 Savior! Pretty much changed my view on things!), I became more and more aware of what makes up commercial perfumes – just a concoction of chemicals that may not be good for you – filled with synthetic fillers, scent boosters to make it longer lasting and requiring to use less of the active scent, keeping the cost of each unit cheaper.
I decided to make my own perfume oils, an art craft which was used at the very beginning of perfumery, until it got taken over by large companies with the desire to make large profits. So really I’m going back to the basics, using botanical oils and essential oils and precious absolutes from flowers. And yes, absolutes are very expensive as it takes so many roses to extract 1 ml of the absolute. But it’s worth it as it is just safer! There can be some allergens in the absolutes to some very minute group of the population; but definitely they are not chemically altering your hormones; so not nasty at all in that way.
I created True Collection natural perfumes. True Scents, True Benefits, True Love – choose your love.
True benefits as the carrier oil is organic jojoba and fractionated coconut oil infused with immortelle or rosehip oil. Rosehip Oil is well known for its skin cell regeneration with natural source of Vitamin E, essential fatty acids omega 3,6,9, vitamin C – a skin brightener and an anti-aging antioxidant. Jojoba and fractionated coconut oil keeps your skin nourished and moisturized, with natural antioxidants, Vitamin A and E, both essential for skin rejuvenation.
Greenchicgirl: Any future projects or new product launches in mind?
Oh I have so many ideas. Creation is the best part that I enjoy the most (as that’s what I’m good at); and it’s fun creating! (chuckles) In the pipeline is perhaps a line that is Essential Oil Free and just using botanical extracts to cater to babies, expecting mothers; and expanding to Body lotions, lip balms.
