It was very difficult to select my favorite serums and face oils – 2017. But many of you kept asking me to post about it; so to keep the list simple and non-exhausting, I have included only those serums and face oils that I have used extensively in the past year. They are all quite exceptional and do much more than they claim. But having said that, there are also many other serums and face oils that I’m enjoying lately; but I’ve kept my blog post limited to the products I have used for more than six months.
[Please remember my opinion is based on my skin type (oily and acne-prone) and how these products perform on my skin in a hot and humid climate where I reside.]
My transition to green beauty actually began with Beautyheroes subscription last year, when they launched Mayachia Supercouple Face Oil as the hero product of that month. I was immediately blown away by their star ingredients – chia seed oil and astaxanthin that mainly constituted this wonderful product. The more I read about it, the more enthusiastic and intrigued I became. Why? Well, because Chia seed oil is rich in omega fatty acids; whereas astaxanthin is a powerful anti-aging ingredient with 65 times the strength of Vitamin C and 14 times stronger than Vitamin E. And when these high-performing ingredients are combined with other active botanicals, they work in synergy to deliver the most spectacular skincare results for your skin.
“The Super Couple is a multi-correctional high-performance ultra-luxe face oil serum combining one of the world’s most powerful antioxidants, astaxanthin, with nature’s #1 superfood, chia, rich with skin-loving omega fatty acids, antioxidants & minerals. Astaxanthin is an anti-aging powerhouse to combat the appearance of dull, tired, aging skin.”
My experience with this face oil has been quite revolutionizing. For someone with an acne-prone skin and one who had never applied any face oil to her face, I was definitely skeptical. Before I began using this face oil, I was in fact quite worried. I already had some acne, acne scars, and open pores near my nose. I vividly remember staring at the amber colored oil for the longest time before applying it to my face with slight trembling hands. But, when I massaged the oil to my face; boy, was I not impressed? How could this happen? The oil had miraculously disappeared and my skin didn’t look one bit oily. I was wondering where the oil had gone. It seemed years of using conventional creams, lotions, and serums had disrupted my skin’s oil balance. But with regular use of The Supercouple, my skin started looking hydrated and well balanced. I have never experienced any breakouts with this oil; in fact it slashed away few right at the nip in the bud. And with regular use, it has only made my skin appear clearer and smoother. And definitely it has changed my perception about face oils! Even now, I reach out for The Supercouple time and again; so I know it’s for keeps!
Last year OKOKO Cosmétiques conquered the green beauty industry by launching a unique serum with an unusual and an uncommon ingredient – Dragon’s Blood (from the Croton Lechleri tree). Dragon’s Blood contains taspine, a remarkable tissue-healing agent that supports healing and helps all skin types cope in today’s busy world. The combination of Dragon’s Blood, 10% niacinamide, willow bark extract, cucumber extract, beta-glucan, and pomegranate enzymes definitely looked promising and gave an edge to this wonderful serum.
L’Élixir de Pureté – Sang du Dragon (or the Dragon’s Blood serum) is the answer to a lot of problems all rolled into one. Water-light in texture and fast-absorbing by nature, this oil-free, expertly blended soothing elixir helps skin recover from the effects of pollution, stress, diet, sun, etc. It reduces the appearance of skin imperfections, hydrates and has a firming effect.
“Sang du Dragon” – the name in itself was quite intriguing for me; and when it launched last year I badly wanted to try it. So when I received it, I did a little happy dance (I literally danced!) The very first thing I noticed was that the serum had a very runny texture, almost watery with tiny specks of Dragon’s Blood in it. I also noticed it had a subtle fragrance, which personally, I’m a big fan of. (I mean if any day they make a perfume out of it, I’ll be the first in line to purchase it!)
This serum is completely oil-free but it gets absorbed into the skin easily and I don’t need more than a pump for my entire face. The watery texture of this serum may mislead you to think it isn’t doing much for your skin; but let me tell you how wrong it will prove you. I have used this serum since the time they launched it last year; and I also have the new Sang Du Dragon with the elevated formula. This amazing serum is a staple in my daily skincare routine; and I feel it has helped improve my skin texture to quite an extent. I also feel that my breakouts have considerably reduced since I started incorporating it into my routine. It’s one of those products you really don’t want to be without – EVER!
When I first came across the brand “Earthwise Beauty,” I felt an earthy and herbaceous connection with the brand. And I had not even read anything about the products or what they offered; but, I guess, it shows how synonymous the brand and their products are. The first three products (Nap in the Meadow Serum, Ruby Face Oil, and Farizad’s Veil SPF Powder) I got to try from this range were through my Boxwalla Beauty Box subscription.
From what I have known about the brand and their erudite founder Ava, all Earthwise beauty products amass a unique and intricate mix of herbs and essential oils. You can actually witness the authenticity of each product through its smell, texture, color, and feel.
So far, I’ve loved all Earthwise Beauty products that I’ve tried. However, if I’d to choose one, Nap in the Meadow would always hold the most favorite spot for me. Nap in the Meadow is a lightweight aloe-based serum that has an interesting bluish-green color. Personally, I love products with different colors and unique ingredients. This serum is packed with some potent ingredients like turmeric CO2 supercritical extract, German blue chamomile oil, Yarrow oil, Helichrysum, and Aloe.
“Nap in the Meadow delivers a broad range of benefits in a single product: deep hydration, strong anti-inflammatory action, anti-oxidants, anti-aging benefits, refreshing effects, and even some acne reducing, tissue repairing, and sunburn and sun damage repair.”
I particularly love Nap in the Meadow during the summers. Since I live in a tropical climate where we barely get any winter or colder climate; this aloe-based serum that seems oil-free is something I always reach for. What really adds to the experience is that (as instructed) I store it in the refrigerator and then absolutely revel in the calming and soothing effect it gives to my skin. It doesn’t feel oily one bit; in fact, it gives my skin a matte look without making it look dry or parched. During winter, however, I feel that my skin requires to follow it with a face oil for extra moisture.
The first thing I noticed when I got Honua products were their lovely and remarkable packaging. Each box contains the story and message of ALOHA on the inside of the box. It was really delightful! Honua skincare, as a brand, was not known to me. But then again, Beautyheroes, are known to introduce incandescent Hero products to their subscribers every month. And as expected, this lovely duo, turned out to be Hero products for more than one reason.
“Aloha Youth Serum is a blend of traditional Hawaiian botanicals known for giving skin a look and feel of healing and regeneration. Apollo, the hibiscus flower and the native shrub of ‘awa, work together to visibly improve firmness and tighten the appearance of skin.
Ōlena, Hawaiian turmeric, helps to tone down the appearance of inflammation, while addressing signs of sun damage, eczema, and acne. Blended with the ancient Hawaiian plant oils of kukui and kamani, these oils give skin a hydrated and healed feel, while promoting a firm, youthful appearance.”
I have to admit, in the beginning, I wasn’t very regular in using these products. I would either use them individually or sometimes I would just plainly forget about them. But one morning during my rushed morning skincare regime, I felt these Hawaiian beauties were eyeballing at me. So in a haste, I mixed both of them at the palm of my hand and got along with the grind of the day. It was only, first when my hubby complimented on my glow; and then, few of my friends asked the reason for my glowy cheeks (I literally cackled) that I actually paid attention to my skin. It was looking well hydrated, plump, and glowy! And, the next morning when I touched my face while cleansing, I couldn’t believe my face seemed unbelievably soft.
I really admire the authentic fragrance of both of these products; but personally, I’m not very fond of the Ōlena Oil fragrance. But when combined, their skin benefits surmount my personal preference over the smell; plus the fragrance isn’t overpowering in any way so I could easily put that behind me. Normally, I would get dry patches on my cheeks and my forehead during the so-called winters here. But this time, not even a sign of dryness on my face! I’m so happy with this discovery! Honua Aloha Youth Serum and Ōlena Beauty Oil – the lovely duo – are a staple in my morning routine now.
“The Highlight Of The Day by Maya Chia is an ultra-lightweight and non-greasy serum that gives skin an instantly illuminated appearance. This pearlized mineral sheen sits in a base of supercritical chia oil, making it the ultimate makeup as skincare beauty product. Not only will you enjoy the effervescent pink hue of The Happy Hour, your skin will also enjoy the benefits of nutrient-rich botanicals like broccoli seed oil, calendula and rosemary.”
After trying (and loving) the Supercouple Face oil by Maya Chia, my eyes were set on their illuminating serum – The Highlight of the Day. Since my complexion is on the fair side with pink undertones, I chose the Happy Hour shade, which gives a cool-toned pink radiance. I was very excited to try this product mainly for the reason that it would serve the dual purpose of makeup, i.e. – impart a natural glow; and also benefit my skin with its amazing ingredients (yes, I’m hinting at supercritical chia seed oil primarily).
I’m happy to report that I wasn’t wrong with my expectations with this stellar product. I love the subtle citrus aroma of this lightweight serum; and it’s a wonderful sight to just look at the beautiful milky-pink hued serum that applies on my skin silkily. Though the serum is oil-based, it’s totally non-greasy. And I have got so many compliments on the natural glow it gives that I cannot imagine staying without it ever! Not just that, The Highlight of the Day is a multi-tasker – I have used it as a makeup product to highlight particular areas of my face like, the cheek bones, eye brow arch, nose, and cupid’s bow; and I’ve also mixed it with my face oils or foundations to get an overall subtle glow. And this product is so handy that it makes a perfect traveling companion! So a total winner product for me!
